If you didn’t know already, I’m in middle school. And also if you didn’t know, I’m in the percussion club at my school. We had our first competition in February at Dublin High School, and we just had our second one in March at Independence High School. At our first competition, we got first place! But that was because we were only ones our division. And we were the only middle school in that entire place. At our second competition, we got third place out of three schools. We lost the competition, but we were against high schools. We did a really good job at both competitions. Plus we have one more competition in April. So we have a chance to redeem ourselves. Oh by the way, if you were wondering, I play bass drum in the battery section of our ensemble, and I also have two friends in the club with me. We always goof around with each other, and one of my friends, (who is in front ensemble), always helps me and my other friend, (who is in battery with me), set up our stuff. The piece of music we are playing is called Storytellers, and we are playing our music at a high school level.
On the day of our competition, we had to leave home at around 1, and get to the school at 1:30. It took us forever to find the school. Eventually, we did find it, and we found out where our camp was too. Luckily, we weren’t late. It started to drizzle a little, but our battery section drums are water resistant, so it was fine. We had to carry our drums on our shoulders to a place that was pretty far from our camp. We had to go somewhere that had a bit of shade. After warming up a bit, we practiced our music for a while. After that, we had to go back to our camp to practice with our whole ensemble.
Soon after we practiced together, it was time to go wait in line for our performance. We got all of our equipment and went to wait in line. There were many parents there as well to help us carry our stuff over to the gym where we going to perform. Once we were in line, we set down our stuff and did an energy circle. In the energy circle, we get our energy pumped and ready to go for the performance. Our local high school was also there, and they joined the front ensemble with their energy circle. But there are three high schoolers that help battery, so two of those high schoolers were with us, but one of them was with the other group, and most of the battery got pretty mad. So now, the name that I call him is “TRAITOR”! I know it’s a little rude, but it’s true! He betrayed us battery members for the front ensemble.
Soon enough, it was show time. We walked in with all of our stuff, set up, and got ready for our teacher to tell us to when to be set. We did a pretty good job and got a decent score as well. I felt we could have done better, but we still did well. After we walked back to camp and put away all our equipment, our teacher talked to us about our performance and our next competition.
Our fabulous parent volunteers brought and made us food. We got to have burrito/tacos and it tasted delicious. And as we were eating my friends and I talked about a lot of random things. After eating, we went back to the gym to watch other performances. We saw some awesome high schools do amazing performances. Once we got super tired, we headed home. We had a lot of fun throughout the day. But when we got home, I was extremely sore and tired.
We are now practicing for last and final competition. We are going to do an amazing performance, and blow the minds of the judges away! And I’m very sad to say this, but our percussion club is ending in a month! I’m super sad that this year is already over, but I can’t wait to try out next year!
