At my school, Alta Vista, all 5th graders get do a Walk Through American Revolution. In this, 5th graders each get a character card. The character card will be a person from 1760’s. Someone who was alive and who was a big part of the American Revolution. Such as George Washington, John Hancock, Betsy Ross, Benedict Arnold, and many more. These people were alive at the time, and students play the parts of these people. Some students may have also gotten a word card. The word card will have a special word that was super important during the revolution. Such as the Gatsby ship, Declaration of Independence, or minute men. There were many others too.
My part was from the British side. I had two parts. I was King George the Third and General Charles Cornwallis. Some people had two parts, like me. It wasn’t mandatory to have a costume, but it was recommended. For King George the Third, I got a red cape that decorated with golden and silver glitter glue. I also got a special black and white felt that I glued onto the top of the cape. I then got a crown and a ring with a big fake gem. My dad helped me make a scepter. We got an empty ornament and I filled it with crystal rocks. My dad got a metal rod and we taped one of the sides closed. He stuck the ornament onto the rod, and then taped it together. He thought it looked a little plain, so we put a ribbon spiraling around the rod. It looked really cool, and I really did look like a king.
For my other part, General Charles Cornwallis, I didn’t have to do too much. I used my brother shirt with some pant, got a hat, and the only thing I had to make was my white flag. I got a big meter stick from my teacher, and then taped a huge piece of paper onto the stick. And voila! My other costume is done. The last thing I need to do is memorize my lines for each character. Which I did do and I did a dress rehearsal with myself and everything worked out fine.
On December 13, 2016, all my hard work paid off.
And boy was it A LOT of FUN!
