Percussion Championships

We just had our percussion championships on Saturday! We practiced really hard in the last two weeks preparing for this. After every practice, my hand would hurt really badly. Then when it was championships day, we got to the James Logan High School and got to warm up. We warmed in sections, went into subs, practiced out parts, and then ensembled with everyone. We did about 5-6 run-throughs of our song. And each time, it was better and better. We took a small break and then got in line to push over to the gym, which is where we were going to perform. We had to walk super far, and it was hard with my bass drum. It hurt a lot, but when we were right outside the gym, waiting for our turn, we got to put our stuff down. And boy did that feel good.

We did our usual energy circle, where we all hug around each other’s necks, and then built up our energy by moving from side to side, and yelling! My favorite part, yelling. Our instructor was motivating us by telling us that we should aim to get above 90 points! And he also reminded us to slow down, ’cause there is a part of the song where we always speed up too much. We were pumped, and ready to go in there and dominate! We pushed our stuff into the gym, but we still had to wait for a bit behind some curtains. And finally, it was our turn!!! We pushed in and got set up, and we were ready to play our song for the last and final time. We played our entire song beautifully, but near the end, we sped up, A LOT. But it was still good, we ended perfectly, and our front ensemble did their visual really nicely.

Our director was really proud of us. We walked back to camp with all of our stuff, packed everything up for the last time this year. We were all super happy and excited about everything. Our director talked to us for a bit, and she also told us about our end of the year party! That’s going to a lot of fun. We had our dinner, and a little bit of dessert. And then we watched as our high school, Leigh High School, warm up, and practice their parts. I watched the battery section because I’m part of battery. I got to watch them up close too. I also went to go watch the front ensemble, where my friend was sitting.

We watched both sections for a while, and then we went back inside the gym to watch other performances. We got to watch Leigh’s show, which was AWESOME! We got to watch other high schools as well. They all did a great job. Soon enough it was time for awards. We ALL lined up to go to the gym. We got third place out of three teams, but we were against high schools, so we didn’t feel that bad. But the best part was that we got a total score of 83.2! That’s almost 20 more points than last time! We were so proud of just that. After awards, we were all super tired and we all went home.

My parents were really proud of us as well. Almost as soon as I got home, I went to sleep. I was extremely exhausted. But fortunately, the next day was a chill day. I playdate with a friend and we baked a chocolate cake and made a cheer routine for our friend. So, one of my very close friends tried out for the cheer team, and made it! So in honor of her, my friend and I made her a cheer routine. We are very proud of her for not giving up. And on Monday night we’re having a movie night, which is going to be to celebrate three things: Spring Break, my percussion championships, and my friend getting on the team! So many things to celebrate! I’ll have another blog about that party.
